We’re working on a fantastic photography book about Amsterdam and we’ve got square eyes from selecting and judging images. So, we need your help. On Facebook you will find a selection of Ewout Huibers’ images. Like your favorites – max 10 – and if you wish, tell us why. In return you can win one of the three copies we give away the minute the book returns from the printer in November.

Here’s a heavy weight collabo: Muhammad Ali photographed by Annie Leibovitz for the new Louis Vuitton campaign. The little boy in front is Ali’s grandson. The legend is actually looking pretty good - or Annie is a danm good photographer.

In The Netherlands, everybody knows Jan des Bouvrie. He was one of the first Dutch designers, if not the first, who turned himself into a brand. Some even only know him as a society figure, characterized by Dutch tv show Glamourland. But that doesn’t do justice to the man who has been restyling the Dutch interior for over 50 years now. He’s been an ambassador for the use of white, he introduced the open kitchen and brought the outdoors indoor. WBOOKS does do justice to Des Bouvrie with this stunning publication, which isn’t just a chornological summary of his work, but a playfully arranged selection of his interiors, furniture designs, product designs and examples of his comprehensive art collection. Icing on the cake: cover photo by Erwin Olaf. Read more.

Here it is, Erwin Olaf’s highly anticipated new book ‘Own’. This book is the regular trade version, based on the limited edition that was published in November 2011 and sold out in the blink of an eye. It’s a beauty, offering a wonderful overview in Mr. Olaf’s work so far, which is diverse to say the least. To see people’s faces when they leaf from the subdued photos from Rain or Grief to the explicit series like Fashion Victims or Squares is a blast. But most of all it’s a beautifully produced homage to one of the best photographers Holland has ever seen. An instant MENDO Classic! Oh, by the way: Mr. Olaf is coming to MENDO on the 26th of May to sign his new book and you are invited!
Get your copy now.

Alber Elbaz, Lanvin. Now, fashion addicts are already on their way purchasing this rare piece, so we can tell you about this remarkable combination. Alber Elbaz is a big-shot in fashion. In a nutshell: born in ‘66 in Morocco, immigrated to Israel, served in the Israeli Defense Forces and studied at the Shenkar College of Engineering and Design. After he moved to New York in 1985 Elbaz’ career took him from a mother-of-the-bride manufacturer to American fashion designer Geoffrey Been and from Guy Laroche to Yves Saint Laurent. In 2001 he took the big step to become artistic director for Lanvin in Paris, which is the oldest fashion house worldwide, and thanks to his hands-on manner, Lanvin is ready for decades to come – amongst others by appointing Lucas Ossendrijver from Amersfoort as head of menswear. Ten years of Elbaz’ loyal service and success was a reason enough for Lanvin to publish this very special book – handmade, bound in silk, with luxurious details including hand-gilded edging, engraved typography and black foil stamping on the spine and cover, and then we haven’t even opened it. This rare and highly collectible book can be purchased at Lanvin’s flagship stores, at Colette in Paris and – we say this with pride - at MENDO.

After visiting the Dutch HQ of Vogue, Ingela Klemetz Farago was sent over to MENDO to present her book Northern Women In Chanel. You must know many people make books and many people think MENDO should sell them (we’re not being arrogant here – it’s just the way it is). So when Ingela hopped into MENDO at first we slightly sceptic – as usual. That scepticism only lasted for 5 seconds. This particular woman and her husband approached Chanel with the idea for the book. They got carte blance and created this radical book about Northern Women featured in Chanel, hence the title, and good old Karl even wrote a preface. Northern Women and Chanel are a match made in heaven, and features a personal favorite of ours, Miss Helena Christensen. The book accompanies the art project, 2112 hand-numbered copies were made and all the revenue goes to Save The Children. Props for Ingela!

Comment about MENDO on a review in Another Travel Guide: ”Excellent collection but not surprising. Arrogant salesman more interested in money than photography. Advice: Don’t engage with any of the sales people, browse the books and order at Amazon.”
We’re sorry David. But also, we can’t help thinking it’s kinda funny.

Our friends from Scotch & Soda recently started a wonderful interview project ‘Amsterdam A City Full Of Color’, portraying local heroes including our very own Gunifort Uwambaga. Now, we obviously knew Guny was a hero, but now it’s official. Congrats Scotch on a superb Amsterdam promotion project.
